Counsellor or Psychotherapist? Help!

You’ve decided to look for support (big step, well done you)… but suddenly you're met with two titles that sound suspiciously similar: counsellor and psychotherapist. What’s the difference? Is one more qualified? Does one wear a lab coat and the other hand out herbal tea?

Let’s clear up the confusion — in plain English — so you can get on with finding the right support for you.

First Things First: There’s a Lot of Overlap

In the UK, the terms counsellor and psychotherapist are often used interchangeably. Both are trained to help you explore emotional difficulties, work through life’s challenges, and support your mental health.

Both may work short- or long-term, online or in-person, and with a variety of approaches (like Transactional Analysis, CBT, person-centred therapy… or a blend, like I use at Oasis Therapy).

So what’s the difference, then?

Counsellor vs. Psychotherapist: The Main Distinction

🔹 Counsellors often focus on specific, present-day issues and may work on a shorter-term basis. Think: managing stress, navigating relationships, processing a life change.

🔹 Psychotherapists might go deeper into long-standing patterns or explore how early experiences impact your present. They often train for longer and may work long-term.

But in reality? Many professionals — myself included — do both, depending on your needs.

So... Who Should You See?

Forget the labels for a second. What matters more is:

✔️ Do they feel like someone you can trust and talk to?

✔️ Are they qualified and insured?

✔️ Do they have experience with what you’re bringing?

✔️ Do they offer a first session or intro call to test the waters?

I’m a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, which means I’m trained at an advanced level to work deeply and relationally — but I’ll always meet you where you are. Some clients want to explore trauma and patterns; others just need a space to think things through. Both are welcome here.

Finding the Right Fit

It’s okay to shop around. Therapy is a relationship — and the “click” matters more than the job title.

Whether someone calls themselves a counsellor, psychotherapist, or both, look for warmth, clarity, and a sense of being understood.

At Oasis Therapy, I work with adults offering a space that’s gentle, grounded, and trauma-informed. I’m especially passionate about working with LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent clients — and bringing a down-to-earth, real-world feel to therapy.

Ready to Start?

If you're still not sure whether you need a counsellor, psychotherapist, or someone who doesn’t mind which word you use — I offer a free, informal intro session so you can see how it feels.

Whether you’re local to Uckfield, East Sussex or looking for online therapy across the UK, I’m here when you’re ready.
