Where Do I Start? All the Therapists Seem the Same?!

So, you’ve decided to try therapy.....but now you’re staring at a sea of therapist websites and wondering, “How am I supposed to choose? They all sound the same!”
You’re not alone. Finding the right therapist can feel a bit like online dating — lots of similar profiles, vague buzzwords, and that nagging question: Will I actually click with this person?
Let’s break it down, with a little help from me (Suzanne at Oasis Therapy), so you can choose a therapist who actually feels right for you.
It’s Not Just About Qualifications (Though Those Matter)
Yes, your therapist should be qualified and accredited (tick!). But therapy is also about relationship and fit. You need someone who “gets” you — who feels safe, real, and able to hold space for the messy stuff and the everyday stuff.
So how do you figure that out?
Top Tips for Choosing the Right Therapist
🔍 Read beyond the jargon. If a website is all theory and no warmth, it might not give you a sense of the human behind the practice. Look for someone who speaks in a voice that resonates with you. Do they sound approachable? Do they explain how they work?
🧠 Think about what you want. Do you want someone who listens deeply? Someone who gently challenges you? Someone LGBTQIA+ affirming? Neurodivergent-aware? Trauma-informed? Your needs matter — and the right therapist will welcome them.
🗣️ Try a free call. Many therapists (including me!) offer a free consultation or intro session. It’s a no-pressure way to see how it feels to talk with them. Trust your gut. Therapy is relational — you’re allowed to want to feel a spark of connection.
🛋️ Location and logistics count. Do you want online flexibility or an in-person session in a calm, private space? Oasis Therapy will shortly offer both — in my cosy room at Bird-in-Eye Farm in Uckfield, or via secure online sessions across the UK.
What Makes Oasis Therapy Different?
There’s no one-size-fits-all therapy here. I blend Transactional Analysis, a relational style, and a good dash of warmth, humour and honesty. You might cry, you might laugh, you might have an “aha!” moment that sticks with you for weeks.
I've worked with adults from all walks of life, especially those exploring identity, shame, past patterns, neurodivergence, sexuality, or just feeling a bit... stuck.
Therapy with me isn’t cold or clinical. It’s human, down-to-earth, and made just for you.
So... Where Do You Start?
Right here. Read a few therapist profiles. Listen to your gut. Book that intro chat. And remember — you don’t have to find the perfect therapist. You just have to find someone you can build trust with over time.
If Oasis Therapy sounds like it might be your kind of space, I’d love to hear from you. Get in touch and join my waitlist, I plan to start sessions soon, once accredited and awarded.
